These vintage candles were designed in Oakland, CA at the Stone Candles, Inc. factory during the 1960s - 80s. The technique is modeled after millefiori Venetian glass blowing. To create these candles, warm pigmented sheets of wax are intricately bundled together to form rods that are then sliced into veneer, wrapped around clear wax making up the core, and sculpted.

 

Though this process has been replicated by different manufacturers around the world, Stone Candles, Inc. was the innovator and its “mom and pop” co-founders were “original hippies,” making these unique candles in the style and spirit of their time. Stone Candles, Inc. grew from a small street vending operation on Berkeley’s Telegraph Avenue into a multi-story factory near Oakland’s Jack London Square, employing hundreds of workers over the years, making up a vibrant community of artists and craftspersons before the company's sale and closing–the end of an era.
